The Oil Can Delay's origins trace back to the 1950s and the innovative work of Ray Lubow, co-founder of Tel-Ray Electronics and later Morley. Lubow's invention, patented in 1959, utilized a rotating drum filled with oil to create a unique delay effect. The oil served to stabilize the audio signal 'charge,' resulting in a characteristic warble and slapback echo. This technology was licensed to companies like Fender, Gibson, and Rickenbacker, finding its way into numerous amplifiers and standalone units. Morley continued to manufacture oil can delays until 1989, solidifying their place in music history.
Modern Revival?Inspired by Nels Cline
The JHS Oil Can Delay owes its existence to a chance encounter between JHS founder Josh Scott and legendary guitarist Nels Cline. At Wilco's Solid Sound Festival in 2022, a conversation about unusual delays sparked Cline's interest in an oil can style effect. JHS developed a one-off pedal for Cline, who was so impressed that he used it on Wilco's albums 'Cruel Country' and 'Cousin,' as well as on tour.
